Seeing Red
Red, makers of high-end digital video cameras, just released their new 5K Scarlet-W and Scarlet-W Monochrome models, which shoot 5K and 2K ProRes with their own branded Dragon Sensors. At only 3.5 pounds, the relatively compact camera can shoot 60 frames per second (fps) in widescreen format, or 150 fps at 4K, or 300 fps at 2K. And in a world where digital video is allowing everyone to become a budding film director, the Scarlet-W is just about top-of-the-line for amateur filmmaking. For the uninitiated, Red became famous for edging out film cameras in Hollywood, and movies such as The Avengers, Jurassic World, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy were all shot on Reds. Considering all that, the $9,950 price tag for the new Scarlet-W isn’t such a bad deal. For a movie studio-quality camera you can handle in your own home, it’s a no-brainer. Add-ons, however, such as lenses, will cost extra. red.com
