To The MAX
There are movie theaters and there are good movie theaters, but perhaps no theater offers the visual and aural experience of an IMAX theater. Renowned for offering the crème de le crème of movie-going technology, IMAX has heretofore been a destination-only privilege. But not anymore. IMAX is now offering a home theater installation service that will put a fully-functioning 3D IMAX setup right in your own house. There are several options to choose from, but the baseline Palais model comes with dual 4K 2D/3D projectors, touchscreen remotes, state-of-the-art IMAX sound systems, and theater seating for up to 18 people. All of that will run you about $400,000. For an additional $10,000, you can get a set-top box that will play current IMAX releases (you’ll still have to pay for the movie) as well as streaming services for films, TV shows, and music. Other apps, such as Screening Room, will also play “in-theaters-now” films, though the price per film is about double what a theater ticket would cost. But for the convenience of not having to leave the house for a true IMAX experience, it’s worth it. imaxprivatetheatre.com
